In the Future,
everything’s possible
You can’t connect the dots looking forward; only look-
ing backward, so said the oracle Steve Jobs.
And that places us—the people working to advance prepaid and emerging payments—as the connectors of the dots between what’s happening now and what’s to come. In this issue of Pay Magazine, we’re
exploring the great conundrum of handling day-to-day responsibilities, while working on the future we envision. Jump in anywhere in this chock-full edition of Pay Magazine to start exploring.
How about starting with our 6 Payments Visionaries (page 6), who share how their visions became real and their excitement for what’s to come? Or, how about our special feature on the intersection of loyalty and mobile (page 110)—the spot with amazing promise for putting it all together as mobile devices become our digital everything? Or, start
with the visions of those outside the U.S.—Canada (on pages 42 and 46) and Paybefore Awards Europe’s 2014 Best-in-Category winners (page 54). For more on Europe, get to know Gibraltar, as it sets its sights on becoming an e-money hub (page 30).
Innovation makes it all possible, and we think you’ll appreciate our Innovators’ Spotlight, highlighting three companies that couldn’t be more different—a financial institution, a technology company that’s breathed life back into the case for NFC in the U.S. and a consumer financing provider (page 24). Plus, our take on prepaid’s conversion to EMV (page 100).
But, let’s not get our heads over our skis. Read our interviews with key players as they deal with what’s real today: Visa’s Cecilia Frew (page 89), MetaBank’s Brad Hanson (page 84) and Blackhawk Network’s Talbott Roche (page 15). And, there’s no discussion of prepaid and emerging payments without mentioning compliance and security, so check out how third parties can use compliance to be better partners for their banks (pages 68 and 74), the importance of data security (page 92)
and practical advice on how retailers can cut prepaid-related fraud (page 118).
Keep on imagining the future,
