Will You Adapt to Change
OR FORge It?
Mahatma Gandhi is often quoted as saying: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” While there is
some debate as to whether those were his exact words, I think we can apply the principle to our work in payments and nancial services.
As someone who’s been covering this industry for 10 years,
I’ve witnessed a lot of changes but have heard even more talk.
With the “Pays” nally gaining some traction and banks and retailers entering the fray with their own wallets, I do think 2017 is poised for signi cant growth in mobile payments. But as First Annapolis’ Allan Reynolds points out in our Game-Changing Technology special report on page 26, in-app and mobile browser-based payments are where we’ll see the majority of mobile payments volume in the near future. And, of course, changes are coming for prepaid in the U.S. once things nally settle with the CFPB’s nal prepaid accounts rule (page 48).
The question I have for all of you is this: Will you merely be adapting to changes in regulation or market trends like chatbots (page 38) and arti cial intelligence or will you be in the driver’s seat?
In this issue, we reached out to many companies that would say the latter. You’ll see them in our Industry Views article (page 10) talking about the balancing act of innovation and compliance. Still more are featured in our Innovators’ Spotlight series (page 16), our Tech Gurus pro les (page 4) and the special report I mentioned earlier.
What we realized when tackling the subject of Game-Changing Technology is that even though seismic shifts are usually gradual as The Bancorp’s Jeremy Kuiper discusses on page 22, it’s a big topic. So, we’re devoting signi cant ink in our Fall issue to con- tinuing this discussion.
We look forward to your feedback on our rst installment and learn- ing about the changes you’re making to move the industry forward.
