Commerce Comes to EvEry dEvicE By Sherri Haymond, MasterCard
The phone is great for making payments, but it’s not always readily accessible—like when you’ve got a bag of groceries under each arm and you’re trying to get on the subway. Or when you go for a Saturday morning run. But the exciting thing about the technology powering today’s digital wallets is that it can extend beyond mobile devices and provide consumers with the freedom to make pay- ments using whatever contactless device or thing that’s most con- venient, with the highest level of security available.
This has been MasterCard’s long- held vision—to turn every device into a commerce device—and it recently became a reality when we assembled leading partners across the automotive, fashion and tech- nology industries to unveil our initiative to bring payments to any device, accessory and wearable.
Explosion of Form Factors
We introduced several prototypes in 2015, including a dress, hand- bag, gloves and sunglasses, de- signed exclusively for MasterCard by fashion mogul Adam Selman. Each item is embedded with tech- nology that enables consumers to pay for their purchases with a simple tap or wave of the hand. We also demonstrated payments capability in a key fob from auto- maker General Motors, a wrist- band from wearable technology innovator Nymi, a Bluetooth- locator device from TrackR and
a cocktail ring from smart jewelry company Ringly.

We believe this is only the beginning of an era of commerce for every device. As more and more things become connected, consumers will have endless payment possibilities and will need all of their devices
to work seamlessly together.

The same technology we’re using
to enable payments in GM key fobs could extend to the car console. Imagine paying for a drive-thru meal with your car before you even pull up to the window!
We believe people want the free- dom to pay with di erent things,
in di erent ways, at di erent times—and they want to do so without sacri cing any of the security or other bene ts they enjoy today. Enabling commerce for every device could be the tipping point to drive consumer adoption—the point when mobile payments become the rule, rather than the exception.
