hot jobs
Whether you’re seeking to hire a new employee or keep a current staff member happy, you need to know the types of positions in highest demand, and thus subject to the stiffest competition, explains DeBerg. The top three hottest job categories in payments at the moment are:
SaleS
Companies especially want salespeople with a successful track record of selling to banks, program managers, fintech companies, large international merchants and e-commerce providers. Elite salespeople— those in the top10 percent of the industry—are especially prized; these elites typically make up to 80 percent of a company’s sales, DeBerg notes.
ComplianCe, riSk and audit profeSSionalS
As emerging payments prod- ucts have become mainstream, regulators increasingly have turned their attention to the
industry—and more regulatory requirements mean more manpower. Some agencies even have mandated increases in these areas. For example, the FDIC and OCC recently ex- pressly required several regu- lated banks to increase their numbers of compliance, risk and audit staffers and raise the total level of experience within those departments.
produCt managerS
Payment card issuers often require multiple teams for managing the full array of products they offer, including credit, debit and prepaid cards,
along with other payment products, like mobile wallets. That’s a far cry from the pre- 2000 era, when issuers offered a more limited set of products and many had only acquisition and retention teams.
the bottom line
Overall, DeBerg says, the principles behind attracting and retaining talent are much the same. By offering challeng- ing work in a supportive environment, clearly defined goals and expectations, and an opportunity to learn and grow, payments companies large and small can maximize their chances of getting and keeping the top professionals in
the industry. And, with today’s dynamic payments landscape placing a higher premium than ever on human capital, having the best talent on board is a
key ingredient to success.
