In the U.S., no other retailer has woven gift cards into the fabric of its business like Walmart. It’s no surprise, then, that in the
U.K., that distinction goes to Walmart subsid- iary ASDA. With the help of long-time partner First Data, ASDA’s Closed Loop Gift Cards go beyond great gift-giving options to serve a variety of consumer needs from budgeting and student spending to layaway and saving for Christmas. ASDA also uses the gift card plat- form to support loyalty rewards, rebates, pre-sales and a buy-sell-trade program for pre-owned video games.
ASDA and First Data use a “Five Star Gift Card Model” to identify the right card assortment to meet customer needs; merchandize for easy shopping; develop for key seasons; adjust to store formats and traits; and drive awareness, trial and education.
The retailer stays plugged into its customers through research. For example, ASDA conducted a “pulse of the nation” survey of more than 1,200 customers in 2013. The goal was to
help ASDA create a card range that was more “giftable.” Customers were asked to provide feedback on gender, age and the occasion for which they would be most likely to gift the card. ASDA responded with an expanded range of cards, including the “Man Card,” which became
a top 10 seller in 2013.
