why it works: For Navy Federal Credit Union’s consumer base of military personnel deployed to far-flung global locations, the Visa Buxx app enables parents to monitor and control their student’s spending with convenient tools, such as the ability to top-up the balance from almost anywhere by transferring funds from their NFCU credit or debit card. Parents also can use the app to suspend a card in case of loss or misuse.
why it matters: The app is a two-way street for students and parents, enabling youths to request funds from parents via text, email or in-app messaging and providing account visibility to help parents keep an eye on card use. Since its introduction, the app’s popular- ity has dramatically reduced NFCU’s demand for live customer service support and has significantly increased ad-hoc top up. In the first six months, 45 percent of cardholders were using the app.

of features to promote financial literacy among students by making it easy to find the nearest ATM and track real-time balance and transaction information down to the date, time, amount and merchant for each purchase, with the option to post transactions to social media directly within the app.
